The Algerian national football team represents Algeria in the Football Association and is controlled by the Algerian Football Association. The team plays its home games, especially at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida.

Algeria joined FIFA on January 1, 1964, a year and a half after gaining independence. The North African team qualified for four World Cups in 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014. Algeria won the African Cup of Nations twice, once in 1990, hosted the tournament and again in 2019. The 2014 World Cup in Algeria was the first African team to score four goals in the World Cup against South Korea.

The traditional rivals of Algeria are Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. Algeria has also played very competitive games against Nigeria, especially in the 1980s during the best football generation in Algeria, against Mali, because there are common borders and longstanding rivalries, as well as against Senegal. Here began the first global success of Algeria. For the Algerians, their biggest win is undoubtedly the 2-1 victory over West Germany at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, where the African nation shocked the world. Algeria has spawned many talented players over time and is considered one of the best teams in the history of African football.

The team was founded in 1962 after independence from France as the successor to the FLN football team. Under French rule Algeria could not have a national team, the FLN football team was a kind of rebellion against the French colonization. All of their games were considered friendlies and were not recognized by FIFA. After being officially recognized by FIFA in 1963, the Algerian national football team qualified only for the 1968 African Nations Cup and was unable to qualify for the next five African Cup editions until 1980, when the Algerians had a great success. Algeria prevailed in the semi-final against their opponent Egypt and reached the final for the first time. Only the hosts Nigeria lost 3: 0 This tournament was considered the birth of the Algerian team as one of the big teams in Africa. 1982 The FIFA World Cup Algeria provided one of the biggest World Cup disruptions on the first day of the tournament with a 2-1 victory against the reigning European champions West Germany. In the last game of the group between West Germany, Austria and Chile, in which Algeria played its last group match the day before, the European teams knew that a victory of the West Germans with 1 or 2 goals would qualify them both A German victory would qualify Algeria against Austria and a draw or an Austrian victory would eliminate the Germans. After a 10-minute attack West Germany scored a goal by Horst Hrubesch. After the goal was scored, the two teams kicked the ball aimlessly for the remainder of the game. Songs from "Fuera, fuera" ("Out, out") were shouted by the Spanish crowd, angry Algerian supporters waved to the players with banknotes. This performance was also greatly regretted by the German and Austrian fans. Algeria protested to FIFA, who decided that the result should remain. FIFA introduced a revised qualification system at the following World Championships, during which the last two games in each group were played simultaneously.
