The Olsen Gang (2000-2015)

FIFA World Ranking for Denmark, August 1993 - July 2009

The new coach, who competed for Denmark in July 2000, proved to be the former captain of the national team of the successful team of the 1980s, Morten Olsen. The team was quickly referred to as "Olsen Gang", a reference to the series of Danes films around the main character Egon Olsen and his ingenious (criminal) plans. The nickname was sometimes also used for the Danish team as an alternative to the more common "Danish dynamite", even in those days when Olsen played as captain. In the era with Olsen as coach, his great experience was transferred from Ajax to the national team, as Denmark's tactics shifted from the favored 4-4-2 formation practiced by Bo Johansson to an even more offensive style with a focus on the fast wing players available at the time, namely Jesper Grønkjær and Dennis Rommedahl. Accordingly, the preferred formation of Olsen was either a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 formation. Olsen even had a decided opposition to the 4-4-2 system when he threatened to leave his position as head coach if asked to use Denmark in that formation. To support the development of players for the new tactical 4-3-3 system, all national youth teams also changed their formation. Another change that Olsen brought into the national team was the emphasis on the importance of using only fit players who were granted a regular time in their club. At times, however, he was forced to compromise on this principle, as the pool of players available in the relatively small nation did not always provide him with useful substitute options.

Denmark qualified for both the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 European Championships, but despite impressive results in the group stage of both tournaments, especially the 2-0 victory against reigning World Champion France in 2002, Denmark failed to make further progress Both tournaments were clearly defeated in the first round after the group stage with 0: 3. At the 2002 World Cup, Denmark were defeated by England in the round of 16 and at the 2004 Euro they dropped out in the quarter-final against the Czech Republic. The Euro 2004 will also be remembered for an incident in the group stage against Italy, in which Italy's star Francesco Totti was caught in front of Christian Poulsen's camera and then Denmark and Sweden were eliminated in the last group stage of Italy. The two teams parted after a Swedish Goal in the 89th minute with 2: 2.
