Fiji first participated in the FIFA World Cup qualifier in 1982. Since 1990, Fiji has tried unsuccessfully to qualify for each World Cup. Their best result was a final round match in 2010. The national team also represent Fiji at the OFC Nations Cup after appearing in eight out of ten tournaments before. Fiji's best result is third place in the 1998 and 2008 editions. They have won the Melanesia Cup five times and participated in the Pacific Games from 1963 to 2015 when the competition became a U23 tournament.

Fiji's qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup began in Samoa. They finished second in the qualifying group with Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and American Samoa. The only defeat came against Vanuatu on the final day. Fiji qualified for the OFC Nations Cup in 2004. Following a draw with Tahiti and a win over Vanuatu, their World Cup opportunity ended when Fiji lost the next three games and dropped out in the second qualifying round.

Fiji's next tournament was the 2007 South Pacific Games in Samoa, which was also the first qualifying round for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. After coming safely through the group, which included Tuvalu, Tahiti, Cook Islands and New Caledonia, they took on Vanuatu to qualify for the next round in the semifinals. In the semifinals, they defeated Vanuatu to advance to the next round The second qualifying round with three goals confirmed their place in the gold medal match. However, they lost with a single goal against New Caledonia and were runner-up for the fourth time

The second round of qualifying had a difficult start. Goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau was denied entry because his father had been linked to the 2006 Fijian coup d'état. The game was postponed to the end of the qualifying period, with Fiji winning 2-0. During this rescheduling, the national team played the rest of their World Cup games. The team took third place in the group after scoring just one point in their first three games - a draw with New Caledonia. This was an important factor as the eventual 0-4 loss to the same team ended their hopes of qualifying for the next stage.

Led by Gurjit Singh, the team participated in the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia. In the group stage, the team qualified for the semi-finals with a game that they would survive with a clean sweepstakes. In the semifinals they took the lead in the sixty-ninth minute with a goal from Maciu Dunadamu against the Solomon Islands. But goals from Joses Nawo and Henry Fa'arodo gave the Solomon Islands victory and a place in the gold medal match. Fiji finished fourth and lost to Tahiti in the match 2-1 for the bronze medal.

Juan Carlos Buzzetti returned to Fiji's top job when he led the team to the 2012 OFC Nations Cup. This was also the second part of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In Group B they lost the opening match against New Zealand. The only scorer of the game was Kiwi player Tommy Smith in the eleventh minute. After a draw with Solomon Islands, Maciu Dunadamu scored the only goal of the tournament on 15 minutes. However, a late strike by Kema Jack ended the Fiji tournament in a tie and knocked them out in the group stage.

After not playing for three years in an A-League, the national team played two friendlies against the A-League club Wellington Phoenix, before she moved to the Pacific Games 2015 in Papua New Guinea in the U23 squad. This was also a qualification for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. After losing the opening game, they drew in the second game, with Roy Krishna and Ilimotama Jese each scoring for Fiji. More friendlies took place before the national team for the OFC Nations Cup 2016 to Papua New Guinea set off. This was also the second qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup. With a squad that only had three outside the National League, Fiji lost the opening match against New Zealand with Krishna's only goal in the 3-1 defeat. After defeating the Solomon Islands in their second game with a Krishna goal, they had to defeat Vanuatu in the final group match to qualify for the semi-finals. [After almost getting the early lead from Krishna, Fiji fell two goals back from Dominique Fred and Fenedy Masauvakalo give Vanuatu the lead. In the second half Fiji prevailed with two goals, as the goals of Samuela Kautoga and Krishna drove the team into the qualification. But Fiji came out of the competition in the 75th minute when Brian Kaltack Vanuatu scored a goal difference in the semi-finals.

For the third place they qualified until the third qualifying round. Fiji faced Group A with New Zealand and New Caledonia. Before the first game against New Zealand, Frank Farina was replaced by Christophe Gamel in the top job. Gamel said, "We respect our opponents and know they are strong." in his first press conference as a manager.
