The seasons last from August to May. The teams each play 34 games, a total of 306 games in the season. Most games are played on Fridays and Saturdays, some on weekday evenings. National was founded in 1993 by the French Football Federation and serves as a base league for clubs that are about to become professional or amateur players. The league is composed annually of professional, semi-professional and amateur football clubs. The current champions are Rodez AF. The league games draw on average between 2,500 and 6,000 spectators per game.

There are 18 clubs in Championnat National. During one season, usually from August to May, each club plays twice, once in its home stadium and once in its opponents, a total of 34 games. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. The teams are scored according to the total score, goal difference and goals scored. At the end of each season, the club with the most points will be crowned champion and promoted to Ligue 2. If the points are equal, the goal difference and the goals scored determine the winner. If they are still the same, it is assumed that the teams occupy the same position. In a draw for the championship or relegation decides a playoff at a neutral place on the rank. The second and third placed will also be promoted to the second division, while the four worst placed teams in the amateur league Championnat de France descend and the four winners of the four groups of the amateur league Championnat de France promoted in their place.

Championnat National - The Championnat National is the third league of French football. Although the league has several clubs that are members of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, it is not primarily due to the LFP's refusal to divide its winnings into smaller portions that helps it to work with the many amateur clubs in the league Them to become professional. The French Football Association moderates the league, which was founded in 1993 under the name National 1. It is contested by 20 clubs and maintains a promotion and relegation system with the Amateur League Championnat de France.

Championnat National 2 - The Championnat National 2 is the fourth league of French football and usually comprises 72 football clubs. Most clubs participating in the league are amateur clubs, but a small number of clubs are semi-professional. The CFA consists of 72 clubs, which are divided into 4 parallel groups of 18. It is open to the best reserve teams in France and amateur clubs in France, although only amateur clubs can be promoted to Championnat National. The highest ranked amateur teams in each pool are promoted and replaced by the 4 lowest placed in Championnat National.

Championnat National 3 - The Championnat National 3 is the 5th division of French football and normally consists of 168 teams in 12 groups of 14 teams each, which are based on the regional leagues. The twelve teams (both amateur and professional division reserves in senior divisions) leading their league will be promoted to Championnat National 2. The descent from Championnat National 3 is defined both by the position in the group and by the region to which the club belongs. Normally, a club descends into each regional league that serves this group.
