Since the 2014-15 season, the bottom team play in a play-off against the winner of a play-off between the winners of the Highland and Lowland League to win a place in the competition of the following season.

Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. The teams are scored according to the total score, goal difference and goals scored. At the end of each season, the club with the most points will be crowned league champion. If the points are equal, the goal difference determines the winner. If this still does not lead to a winner, the two teams must participate in a neutral place in a playoff game to determine the final placings.

The champions are promoted directly to the Scottish League One and swap places with the lowest club of the League One. The clubs that rank second in the second league, third, fourth and in first league, then enter the two-legged League One play-off. Runner-up League Two club will play the third-placed League Two club, while the side that finished fourth in League Two will face ninth-placed League One. The winners of these games then play against each other. If a playoff winner of the second league wins, this club is promoted, and the club of the first league descends. When the first division wins, they keep their place in the first division.

In the 2014-15 season, the lowest League Two team will play in a two-legged play-off against the winner of a play-off between the winners of the Highland and Lowland league. If the Highland or Lowland team wins the final, they will be promoted to League Two, with the tenth team descending either in the Highland or the Lowland League. If the team wins the second division, it retains its place in the competition of the following season.
