The Premier Soccer League, South Africa's "Professional Football Professional in the Republic of South Africa," describes the competition as "Premier Division" in its constitution.

The league was founded in 1996 following an agreement between the National Soccer League (South Africa) and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League (South Africa).

The league was reduced from 18 to 16 teams after the end of the 2001-02 season to avoid congestion, which dissolved two teams, Ria Stars and Free State Stars.

In 2004, a match fixing scandal shook South African football. The South African police instituted an investigation in June 2004 codenamed Operation Dribble. More than 40 people have been arrested, from club chiefs to combat commissioners, referees and their assistants.

Kaizer Chiefs successfully defended their championship title in 2005 after winning the prestigious trophy in 2004 for the first time in a decade.

In the season 2005/06 Mamelodi Sundowns took the title for the fourth time. In 2007, PSL signed a television deal with SuperSport worth R1.6 billion. It is the largest sports retailer in the history of South Africa and has led the Premier Division in the top 15 of the world's top leagues in terms of commercial broadcasting agreements.

In the same year, ABSA Castle replaced bearing as name sponsor. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 Supersport United won a hat-trick. As of May 2019, the league is the sixth best in Africa according to the CAF 5-year ranking system.

For the 2018/19 season, PSL grants each club a monthly grant of 2 million rand, with funds from TV broadcasting rights and national sponsorships. The Premiership champion receives a 10 million edge prize.
