Since the 1960s, South Korea has become one of the most important football powers in Asia and, with nine consecutive and ten FIFA World Cup tournaments, has become the most historically successful Asian football team. Although South Korea initially played five World Cup tournaments without winning a game, it was the first and only Asian side to reach the semi-finals when it co-hosted the 2002 tournament with Japan. South Korea won the first two AFC Asian Cup tournaments (1956 and 1960), but has not won since and finished second in 1972, 1980, 1988 and 2015 and third in 1964, 2000 and 2007. and 2011. They also took the gold medal at the 1970, 1978 and 1986 Asian Games. They have qualified for every FIFA World Cup since 1986.

The team is commonly referred to as "The Reds" by both fans and the media because of the color of their primary kit. The support team of the national team is officially referred to as the Red Devils.

At the FIFA World Cup 2018, South Korea was placed in Group F and finished third with three points. They lost their first game against Sweden football 1-0 after they had conceded a penalty. They then faced Mexico and lost 2-1 after receiving another penalty. Despite the two defeats in a row, South Korea has not yet retired. South Korea would have to win the last group match against defending champion Germany with at least two goals and Mexico football would have to win in the last group stage against Sweden. For its part, South Korea did what it took to stay in the competition, beating Germany 2-0, knocking it out in the first round for the first time in 80 years. Mexico, however, lost to Sweden on the same day and South Korea eventually finished third in the group. Germany football had 28 shots with 6 hits, but the South Korean defense, led by keeper Jo Hyeon-woo, did not give in once. By defeating Germany, South Korea rescued Mexico from elimination. As a result, Mexican fans praised the Koreans and celebrated their victory at the South Korean embassy.
