Segunda División B - third tier of the Spanish football league system

Segunda División B (Second Division B) is the third tier of the Spanish football league system, currently divided into 4 groups of 20 teams each. It is managed by the RFEF. It is among the top two levels of the league, the Primera División (also known as La Liga) and the Segunda División as well as the Tercera División. The Segunda División B includes the reserve teams of several La Liga and Segunda División teams.

The term Segunda División B was first used in 1929. He was used to refer to a third tier of teams after the Primera División and a Segunda División A. This division included 10 teams and at the end of the season were Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa crowned champions. In the 1929/30 season, however, it came to the first of many reorganizations of the Spanish football league system, and the original Segunda División B was replaced by the Tercera División. At the beginning of the season 1977/78, the Segunda División B was revived and replaced the Tercera División as a third level. Initially, the department consisted of only two groups. The 1986/87 season was played as a single group of 22 teams. It was changed the next year with 80 teams in four groups from 1987 to 1988.

Segunda División B currently consists of 80 teams, divided into 4 groups of 20 teams each. The four best teams in each group, a total of 16 teams, qualify for play-offs to determine which four teams will replace the four teams relegated from the Segunda División. Reserve teams, however, can only be promoted to the Segunda División if their senior national team is in the Primera División. The five best teams of each group and the best two teams, regardless of the group outside the last 20, with the exception of the reserve teams, also qualify for the following seasons of the Copa del Rey. The bottom four teams of each league descend into the Tercera División. The four teams in 16th place in a relegation playoff to determine the two relegation teams. A team is paired with one of the other teams in the home and away series. The two winners remain in the league, while the losers descend. A reserve team may also be relegated if their national team has relegated from the Segunda División. In addition to teams of the Tercera División also join teams of the division in the Copa Federación.

Since the 2008/09 season, the four group winners have the opportunity to ascend directly to the overall winner of Segunda División B. The four group winners will be drawn in a two-legged series in which the two winners will be promoted to the Segunda División and reach the final for the Segunda División B Championship. The two losing semi-finalists enter the playoff round for the last two promotion places.

The four runners-up will be drawn against one of the three fourth-placed teams outside their group, while the four third-placed teams will be drawn in a two-legged series. The six winners move up with the two losing semi-finalists to determine the four teams that are in the last two-legged series for the last two promotion stages. In all playoff series, the subordinate club plays first at home. Whenever there is a tie in the position (such as the group winners in the semi-finals and in the final or the third-placed teams in the first round), a draw decides if the club will play at home first.
