Football and other organized sports came to Sweden in the 1870s and were mainly practiced by gymnastics clubs, which held most of the sports of the time. England and Scotland were the main sources of inspiration, and it is therefore not surprising that football quickly gained in popularity when the Gothenburg, Stockholm and Visby clubs first passed rules in 1885. The first international club game was held in 1890 and the first game with modern rules was held two years later in 1892.
The first association to host a Swedish national football tournament was Svenska Idrottsförbundet, founded in 1895 in Gothenburg, the then dominant Swedish football city. The club arranged in 1896 the Svenska Mästerskapet, the Örgryte IS won. The tournament was played until 1925, when the first national league, Allsvenskan, was started. In the late 1890s, the IFK associations began to play football, and until 1901, the first Kamratmästerskap (IFK championship) was held in football.
Since then, football has grown and there are currently around 3,300 clubs with 32,700 teams and one million members, of which around half a million are active players.
The current national league system, which is managed by the Football Association, is organized as 1-1-2-6-12, with Allsvenskan the highest Swedish level and Superettan the second highest, followed by two third levels (Division 1) and six fourth levels ( Division 2) and twelve Leagues of the fifth stage (Division 3)
The national cup Svenska Cupen is played by all 30 teams from Allsvenskan and Superettan as well as 68 teams from the lower divisions. Which 68 teams from the lower divisions compete, decides the number of licensed players in the football districts. The Swedish national football team played in 1908 their first international match against Norway. The team was quite successful with a second place at the 1958 World Cup, two third places (1950 and 1994) and a victory at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The Swedish women's national football team was once a leader in the development of women's football and won the unofficial European Championship in 1984, a success that the team could not repeat. However, she won silver at the 2003 World Cup.
Swedish clubs have already played ten times in European club competitions. In men's football, IFK Gothenburg won the UEFA Cup twice in 1982 and 1987 and Malmö FF lost the European Cup final in 1979. In women's football, Umeå IK won the UEFA Women's Cup twice in 2003 and 2004 and lost in the finals in 2001, 2007 and 2008; Djurgårdens IF Dam (then known as Djurgården / Älvsjö) lost in the 2005 final; and Tyresö FF lost in 2014 to the final of the renamed UEFA Women's Champions League.
