The Ukrainian Premier League or UPL is the highest division of the annual Ukrainian Football Championship. As Vyshcha Liha (Ukrainian: Вища ліга, Top League), it was founded in 1991 as part of the Ukrainian Football Championship in 1992 after the end of the Soviet football championship in 1991 and included the Ukraine-based clubs that had previously participated in the Soviet competitions. In 1996, the Top League together with the other professional football leagues of Ukraine became a member of the professional football league of Ukraine.

In 2008 it was withdrawn from the Professional Football League of Ukraine and transformed into a self-governing unit of the Ukrainian Football Association, whose name was officially changed to today's name. His rank was the 8th highest in Europe, rated by UEFA from 2017.

The 2017/18 season is the tenth season of the league after the restructuring of professional club football in 2008 and the 27th season since the introduction of a non-Soviet professional club competition. In summary, it should be noted that Tavriya Simferopol won the first championship, while all the following titles went to either Dynamo Kyiv or Shakhtar Donetsk. On April 15, 2008, the new Premier Liha (Premier League) was founded. The new sports organization consists of 12 football clubs that take control of the operation of the league in accordance with the statutes of the Ukrainian Football Federation, UEFA and FIFA. The reorganization maintained the format of the league, while the changes made were purely administrative in nature. The competitions continued to be conducted in Double Round Robin format among 16 clubs. There were some seasons in which the composition of the 14-club league was experimented. Since the Russian aggression in 2014, the league has been reduced to 12 members, although the format has changed. The season is still played in the first half of the season in the double round game. Then the league is divided into two groups of six (6) teams. Both the first six and the last six play another double round tournament with the clubs of their own group.
The teams that take the top position in the competition table at the end of each season will, as always, have the opportunity to represent the Ukraine internationally in several prestigious tournaments (continental club tournaments). Also at the end of the season, the lower clubs (usually two) are relegated to the First League (part of the lower Professional Football League) and replaced by the top clubs in this league. All participants of the Premier League participate in the national cup competition and participate in the round of 16 (1/16 of the final) or in the round of 16. Also, the winner of the league at the beginning of each season plays against the winner of the National Cup for the Ukrainian Super Cup (under the leadership of the Premier League).
